Solar Panels: What I will save in DHW

Solar Panels: What I will save in DHW

In the latest IDAE report a very interesting data appears: 18.9% of household energy consumption or solar panels corresponds to DHW (hot water). In fact, this figure rises to 24.9% in the case of flats.

If we take into account that the annual energy expenditure is around 1,000 dollars/household, it comes out that approximately 200 dollars are allocated each year to the supply of hot water. Natural gas is the most used energy source for ACS, being present in more than 40% of homes. It is followed by diesel with 26% and electricity with 21.5%. What about renewables such as solar thermal? Where are they?

Well, they represent 1.7% of the total. In fact, in the specific case of solar panels for ACS, there are 220,000 installed nationwide. A figure that is far from the more than 10 million conventional boilers or the almost 5 million electric water heaters in homes.

If solar panels are always associated with savings in ACS, how can it be that there are no more installations? We do not have the exact answer, but one thing that has a lot to do with it is that the ACS facilities are basically a market for the replacement of equipment. That is, most projects are carried out when the equipment in a home (boiler, water heater …) breaks down and what is done is to install a new one, but based on the same energy source.

The reality is that installing a new energy source in a home to support the existing system is an exception. And although they are not complex projects, the end-user does not usually consider it, either due to ignorance or because the installer himself does not offer it.

That is why it is very important to be aware of the advantages of this type of installation and at least have an approximate idea of the savings they represent.

In an article a few months ago, we talked about how solar thermal energy saves 60% in DHW. Doing a quick calculation, we get an annual saving of about 120 dollars. This in terms of energy cost savings, but if we take into account other factors such as maintenance or the useful life of the solar panels, the amount that we will save per year increases.

And it is that with proper maintenance, the useful life of solar panels is around 25 years. If you divide the cost of installing a solar panel between those 25 years, you will hardly have other equipment in your home that is so profitable.

On the other hand, the failure rate is very low. For this reason, it will be very rare that we have to pay a technician to come to our home to solve a fault or technical incident. Savings in expenses for technicians traveling, replacement of parts …

In addition, its maintenance is so simple that the cost of hiring a company to do it is lower than the annual / biannual maintenance associated with facilities based on other systems such as gas or diesel.

And finally, there are different subsidies and deductions related to solar thermal energy that make the necessary initial investment considerably reduced or that once installed and we pay a lower amount in certain taxes.

For all that we have just told you, it is often said that in a standard installation for a single-family home the investment is recovered in about 8-10 years. If the useful life of these facilities is about 25 years, do it! And that’s if only solar panels energy is used for DHW.

With what we have just told you, surely you understand what we say that “For the cold and for the heat, renewable is the best.”

Solar panels energy is becoming more affordable, the cost of batteries has decreased 5 times – expert

The cost of solar panels energy has decreased significantly recently, which makes it more affordable.

This is how a leading engineer and employee of the Institute of Renewable Energy of the National Academy of Sciences, commented on the revival of the construction of solar power plants.

“If you take the situation 5 years ago, the cost of 1 kW of solar power was about 4 thousand dollars. Now it costs 600-800 dollars. This decline in prices is due to the fact that technology is evolving and competition in production is growing,” – he explains. specialist.

He believes that solar energy is the most profitable among renewable sources also because it is easy to operate.

Commenting on possible options for the use of alternative energy sources in the settlement for migrants. “Solar energy is very easy to use. It does not require any additional research before installation. The sun is available everywhere in the open. Solar modules do not require any mechanics, unlike other energy sources.”

It is also very important that solar energy does not harm the environment and is produced throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. “Solar panels can be installed everywhere, regardless of the region, and solar panels work and produce energy even when we do not see the sun, and in winter, too,” he said.

In cloudy weather, the power of solar stations is much lower. But this is a problem of all renewable energy sources, which depend on natural factors. The way out is the accumulation of “green” energy, which is currently very expensive, but it’s only a matter of time – the expert is convinced.
