We do not have the exact answer, but one thing that has a lot to do with it is that the ACS facilities are basically a market for the replacement of equipment. That is, most projects are carried out when the equipment in a home (boiler, water heater …) breaks down and what is done is to install a new one, but based on the same energy source.
The reality is that installing a new energy source in a home to support the existing system is an exception. And although they are not complex projects, the end-user does not usually consider it, either due to ignorance or because the installer himself does not offer it.
That is why it is very important to be aware of the advantages of this type of installation and at least have an approximate idea of the savings they represent.
In an article a few months ago, we talked about how solar thermal energy saves 60% in DHW. Doing a quick calculation, we get an annual saving of about 120 dollars. This in terms of energy cost savings, but if we take into account other factors such as maintenance or the useful life of the solar panels, the amount that we will save per year increases.
And it is that with proper maintenance, the useful life of solar panels is around 25 years. If you divide the cost of installing a solar panel between those 25 years, you will hardly have other equipment in your home that is so profitable.
On the other hand, the failure rate is very low. For this reason, it will be very rare that we have to pay a technician to come to our home to solve a fault or technical incident. Savings in expenses for technicians traveling, replacement of parts …
In addition, its maintenance is so simple that the cost of hiring a company to do it is lower than the annual / biannual maintenance associated with facilities based on other systems such as gas or diesel.
And finally, there are different subsidies and deductions related to solar thermal energy that make the necessary initial investment considerably reduced or that once installed and we pay a lower amount in certain taxes.
For all that we have just told you, it is often said that in a standard installation for a single-family home the investment is recovered in about 8-10 years. If the useful life of these facilities is about 25 years, do it! And that’s if only solar panels energy is used for DHW.
